Project Overview
Kangaroo Works formed a significant part of Sheffield City Council’s Heart of the City II masterplan, and we were proud to contribute to a development that helped reshape the city centre. The 14-storey mixed-use scheme delivered 365 high-specification apartments, five commercial and retail units, secure underground car parking, and a landscaped central park designed to create an active and welcoming environment.
Completed in March 2023, the project strengthened Sheffield’s residential offering while supporting wider regeneration ambitions. Its scale and prominence within the city centre made it a flagship scheme within the Heart of the City II programme.
We were appointed to deliver the full mechanical and electrical package under a £7 million contract, taking responsibility for coordinating and installing all building services across the development. Our scope covered mechanical, electrical, and associated life safety systems throughout residential apartments, communal areas, plant spaces, and commercial units.
From early-stage coordination through to final commissioning, we ensured every element was integrated effectively and delivered in line with programme and compliance requirements. The scale and complexity of the scheme demanded structured planning and disciplined execution at every stage.
Mechanical Systems & Vertical Distribution
The high-rise nature of the development required careful sequencing and coordination. We installed energy-efficient HVAC systems, heating and cooling networks, and ventilation systems designed to maintain consistent internal comfort across multiple floors and occupancy types.
Working within constrained service zones and vertical risers, we coordinated closely with other trades to ensure that mechanical systems were installed efficiently while maintaining quality and accessibility. Vertical distribution strategies were carefully managed to ensure performance consistency from lower levels through to the upper floors.
Ventilation systems were delivered to support residential comfort and communal area performance, ensuring appropriate airflow and compliance with regulatory standards. Plant space coordination was critical to ensure systems operated efficiently within limited spatial allowances.
Across all mechanical installations, we prioritised reliability, efficiency, and long-term maintainability. Each system was designed and delivered to support the everyday comfort of residents while aligning with the performance expectations of a modern city-centre development.
Electrical Infrastructure & Life Safety
In parallel with the mechanical works, we delivered a robust and fully integrated electrical infrastructure capable of supporting a high-density, mixed-use building. This included HV and LV distribution, landlord supplies, metering systems, and power provision to individual apartments and commercial units.
The electrical design ensured clear separation between residential and commercial supplies while maintaining operational resilience. Careful planning of risers and distribution boards ensured compliance, accessibility, and future adaptability.
We installed LED lighting throughout private and communal areas to enhance energy efficiency and reduce long-term operational costs. Lighting schemes were coordinated to support safety, functionality, and aesthetic requirements across shared spaces and individual dwellings.
Comprehensive life safety systems, including fire alarms and emergency lighting, were installed, tested, and commissioned to current regulatory standards. These systems were integrated seamlessly within the wider building infrastructure, ensuring compliance and reliable operation.
City Centre Delivery & Sustainability Focus
Delivering a 14-storey development in the heart of Sheffield’s city centre introduced logistical and operational challenges. Restricted access, limited laydown space, and the proximity of surrounding businesses required a disciplined and structured approach to deliveries and installation sequencing.
We worked closely with HBC Construction, Ridgeback Group, and Sheffield City Council to coordinate works safely and efficiently. Strong communication and proactive planning ensured disruption to the local area was minimised while maintaining programme momentum.
Sustainability was a consistent focus throughout delivery. We incorporated high-efficiency building services systems and intelligent controls designed to optimise energy performance in line with occupancy patterns and operational demand.
The use of LED lighting reduced long-term energy consumption, while the electrical infrastructure was designed with sufficient capacity to support future enhancements or renewable integration if building requirements evolve over time.
Kangaroo Works was a complex and rewarding project to deliver. The scale of the scheme and the constraints of a busy city centre location meant coordination was critical at every stage. Our team worked closely with the main contractor and stakeholders to ensure the installation ran smoothly, safely, and in line with programme. Seeing the finished development contributing to Sheffield’s regeneration was something we were extremely proud to be part of.

Quality Assurance & Completion
Quality assurance and safety were embedded across every phase of the project. We carried out structured inspection, testing, and commissioning processes to validate system performance prior to handover.
Our site teams maintained high safety standards within what was a complex and busy working environment. Despite logistical constraints, progress remained steady while meeting the quality expectations of a flagship city-centre scheme.
Through coordinated sequencing and collaborative working, we delivered the project in line with programme requirements. Each element of the mechanical and electrical installation was verified to ensure performance, compliance, and operational readiness.
