Seamlessly integrating modern engineering into a historic structure

The University of Sheffield needed to enhance the Elmfield Building, improving sustainability, safety, and accessibility while preserving its heritage.

Working alongside Robertson Construction, we delivered a complete M&E refurbishment, futureproofing the space while maintaining its architectural integrity.

I would wish to personally thank Lee, Jordan, and the wider Heb M&E team for your dedication and commitment to completing a challenging refurbishment project on behalf of The University of Sheffield. Both Heb and Robertson’s team have worked collaboratively and in a positive manner to overcome the unknowns of a project of this nature and have offered assistance and solutions to the university's team, which have made this project a success. I look forward to working with you again on future projects.

Bringing Sustainability and Safety into the Modern Era

A university campus is a constantly evolving space.

The challenge with Elmfield wasn’t just about upgrading its mechanical and electrical systems, it was about doing so in a way that supported long-term sustainability, ensured compliance, and minimised disruption to students and staff.

The project demanded an approach that balanced the introduction of cutting edge engineering solutions with the preservation of the building’s historical character. At the same time, the work had to be carefully planned to keep key university facilities, including the Goodwin Sports Centre, fully operational throughout.

A Bespoke M&E Solution for a Historic Setting

To bring the Elmfield Building into the future, we implemented a range of energy efficient heating, ventilation, and lighting systems designed to reduce energy consumption and support the university’s sustainability goals.

The safety and accessibility of the building were also a priority, with upgrades to fire protection, electrical infrastructure, and access systems ensuring full compliance with the latest regulations.

Delivering this project with minimal disruption was essential, so our team carefully phased the works to keep the surrounding university buildings fully functional. Throughout the refurbishment, we took a heritage first approach, seamlessly integrating modern M&E systems without compromising the building’s architectural integrity.

Engineering a Lasting Impact

The result is a revitalised, futureproofed space that is both energy efficient and fully compliant with modern safety standards.

The university now benefits from significant energy savings, a safer and more accessible environment, and a building that remains true to its historic roots. Through meticulous planning and expert execution, we ensured that university life continued uninterrupted while delivering a project that balances innovation with tradition

This project demonstrates Heb Mechanical & Electrical’s ability to deliver complex refurbishments with precision, ensuring that historic spaces continue to serve the needs of the future.
